Yohonna Smith, Host of the Girls Talking Life Podcast, Based in Ohio, USA
Two years ago, I wasn't following any Christian accounts on Instagram. In fact, I didn't even really know people were testifying online! Of course I'd seen accounts from well-known churches and worship bands, but everyday people? It just wasn't on my radar until I felt God nudge me to do this myself and then WOW. What a joy it's been to see media used for good! To open my social media apps and see so many women (and men) of God glorifying him, sharing what they've learned, praying and supporting one another in their faith.
Come and hear, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me. (Psalm 66:16)
And now podcasts! Do you listen to many Christian podcasts? I've started in the last year and am so enjoying the feeling of community that comes with hearing fellow sisters (and brothers) share about what God has done and is doing in their lives.
Yohonna started the Girls Talking Life podcast in 2018 because:
After time with girlfriends, I always feel encouraged and supported, inspired to try something different or I’ve learned something new. Girls Talking Life is here for you when you can’t be with your girlfriends. I hope our conversations will encourage you to share your story and to start talking life with the women around you.
If you haven't already, check out the Girls Talking Life podcast (links at the end) and follow them on social!
Recent episodes discuss:
Following Jesus off the beaten path (Kristan Dooley)
Getting rest and giving thanks (Amber Cullum)
Kill the busy (Yvonne Marie)
Taking back my voice (Brooke Robertson)
Becoming better moms by becoming more like Jesus (Ruth Schwenk)
Girls Talking Life was also the first podcast interview I ever did (linking here but excuse my talking a mile a minute...I was a bit nervous.) :)
Really thankful God brought Yohonna and I together and now I hope you'll be friends with her too.

Welcome! Please could you tell us about yourself and @girlstalkinglife?
I live in central Ohio, along with my husband, two daughters and one bad dog. There I spend my days in the details of family life, trying to find the balance between fun mom and responsible mom. I continuously struggle to find enough time in the day, to be brave enough to take action on the hard things and to love Jesus more. I'm also the creator and host of the Girls Talking Life podcast. On each episode I bring you a girl and her story, plus some fun favorites. I hope that by listening you'll be inspired to initiate change, to be intentional, to cultivate community and to love others well.
Have you ever struggled with identity? How did God lead you to his truth?
Yes, I think we've all struggled with identity. I remember always feeling like a had a tie to God and even when I wasn't walking closely with Him, I could feel that connection. He very gently continued to guide me in closer and closer until I fully understood who I was in Him.
What does celebrating your God-given design mean to you?
Celebrating my God-given design means that I try to authentically share who I am with the people around me. It means not getting caught up in the gifts and talents I don't have have, but celebrating the differences I see in my sisters in Christ. Celebrating my God-given design, leaning into who He made me to be, showing gratitude for His handiwork...that's worship.
How would you encourage someone who is struggling to embrace their God-given design and live out their God-given calling?
I'd encourage her to try and grasp how incredibly special she is to her Heavenly Father, and that He very specifically, very purposely designed her with characteristics, giftings and desires that are unique to her. God can certainly move forward with His perfect plan without our help, but she's been given a special job to carry out by the Creator of the Universe. And if she doesn't do it, there's no one who can.
Thank you for sharing your testimony! Are you open to receiving any follow-up questions? How can we contact you?
