Restaurant review: Velo at K11 Musea

Looking for a new place for pizza, pasta and steak?

I was, and lately I’ve realized (again, perhaps) I’m the kind of person that likes to constantly try new things and have new experiences… hence my endless love for exploring new restaurants. Maybe you’re the same way? If you are, and if you love Italian food, check out Velo in K11 Musea.

Design-wise, the restaurant is glossy and chic. There are two different vibes depending on where you sit - in the slightly more casual resto-bar space or the proper dining room with white tablecloths.

The menu is full of Italian classics with a twist through we couldn’t help ordering some tasty-sounding international treats too.

We started with the Polpo alla Griglia (grilled Spanish octopus, $228). Fresh and bouncy, and served with with a lemon caper sauce, cherry tomatoes, and generous lashings of olive oil.

Next up was our Pizza al Tartufo Nero ($198) with mascarpone and mozzarella cheese, mache salad and truffle oil. This was a highlight with its crisp, cracker-like crust and unusual combination.

Another highlight, and perhaps my favourite dish of the night was the Spaghetti ai Ricci di Mare ($268). The garlicky sauce was rich and umami (and there was lots of it!), the pasta a perfect chewy al dente.

Following this, we had a 40-day dry-aged Bistecca di Sottofiletto di Manzo (a ribeye, $368 for 350g). This was the dish I’d been looking forward to most. It was tender, hearty and satisfying - fatty but not overwhelmingly so, delicious on its own or with the red wine jus. One small quip was that both the roasted and mashed potato ($68) were quite dry.

For dessert, the tiramisu ($98) is a safe choice - not too intense.

We couldn’t stop eating the cake of the week, a light and fluffy taro sponge ($78).

Verdict

If you’re looking for a new Italian spot with an international twist, consider giving Velo a try. Definitely recommend the pizza, pasta and steak but note that the restaurant also puts on a popular semi-buffet at dinner - including fresh seafood and roast carving station plus optional main course - for a very reasonable price of $298+.
