New menu review: Hutong, TST, Hong Kong

A review of the new Red Lantern Evenings menu at this Sichuan food hotspot

Spicy food with a view? Yes, please! A while back, I tried Hutong’s Feng Wei brunch and had a great time. The food seemed never ending (and a good mix of spicy and non-spicy dishes) and I liked the traditional setting. It was a very nice way to spend an afternoon. So I was keen to return when they announced their new Red Lantern Evenings promotion where a whopping thirteen dishes are served to table and the Peking duck is unlimited ($620 per person).

Big shout out to the xiaolong bao (one of the best I’ve had in Hong Kong), chicken and noodles in Sichuan chili sauce, and the signature soft-shell crab with dried chilis.

Hutong’s drinks menu is very large with cocktails, mocktails, sake, wine, Chinese wine, spirits, beer and various free flow packages.

Verdict

We went as two people which was nice but I’d recommend going with a larger group (say four or more) if possible. The presentation is nicer (e.g. a big basket of soft-shell carbs in the Sichuan chilis rather than a small bowl) and service seems better. If you are going with a larger group for a celebration, the restaurant has plenty of stylish private rooms. Enjoy the Red Lantern Evenings from 6 to 9pm every Sunday to Thursday.
