How Does God Speak to You?
How does God speak to you?
For me, and maybe for you, it varies. Sometimes it can be a still small voice. Other times it’s like a clear flood. Sometimes I only hear after I’ve waited on God for awhile. Other times I sense him speaking as soon as I sit down with my Bible and journal. (To name just a few examples.)
Today God took me on a journey.
First, King of My Heart (Bethel) came to mind so I worshipped in bed and as I made my drink (warm water with apple cider vinegar).
Then I read my Bible (Acts 6-9 today) and started journalling out some prayers. I had questions about tiredness and work. I felt God remind me about Holy Spirit fire, perfectionism, holiness, obedience. Usually I like to sit and wait on God but felt him say to make my coffee and then heard from him during that process.
Later as I journaled, a post about remembering to prioritise God as Lord of all when our lives go back to ‘normal’ (i.e. we can live without restrictions) came tumbling out - not packing our schedules with entertainment and indulgence, but remembering the joy of being still before God.
When I finished writing, I closed my journal, ready to go to work.
And I felt God say, “Wait. Finish your coffee. Enjoy.”
“I love working,” I said, chuckling to God.
So I sipped my coffee, just trying to be available to whatever God wanted to say, and had a new thought about waiting.
Honestly, when I think about waiting, sometimes I get frustrated because I focus on a handful of things that I really want. Things I feel like God has said will happen but are outside of my control timing-wise. And I wondered if I would have more joy and energy everyday if I simply waited on God? I mean it’s obvious, but why do I still get so caught up in waiting on promises over waiting on God?
Yes, the Bible is full of people who were waiting on God’s promises. But we are called to wait, and wait patiently for our Lord. There are so many verses on this (so many Psalms!), here are a few that stand out to me today.
*The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. (Lamentations 3:25)
*I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! (Psalm 27:13-14)
*But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
For whatever reason, today is the day God made this crystal clear to me. And I am thankful.
So my takeaways today are: life with God is such a fun adventure, God is so fun and funny, when I think about waiting now may I also frame it as waiting on God versus waiting on his promise.
