New restaurant review: Cafe Boheme

Recently I’ve become acquainted with the Tseung Kwan O (TKO) area and have so many good things to say about it. One of my favourite things to do is visit the waterfront where there are so many restaurants and most of them have great outdoor spaces. The restaurants by Alto Residences are particularly nice and spacious. One of the latest to open is Cafe Boheme.

Cafe Boheme (with boheme translating to bohemian) is a family-friendly restaurant with an artsy vibe, run by the Pastis Group. (There’s another location at Art Park, West Kowloon). The menu is straightforward, focusing on pizzas and fresh pastas. We visited on a Saturday night and the restaurant was buzzy — a hotspot in this bayside suburb! Families and larger groups were mostly gathered in the main dining room, with smaller groups settled around the bar and windowside tables.

We started with a strawberry basil spritz ($50, non-alcoholic) and a passion fruit spritz ($78, alcoholic). Both hits. Refreshing on our hot summer evening and not overly sweet.

For our group of two, we tucked into the following.

The parma ham platter ($118) was straightforward. A bit smaller than I was expecting but nice.

The chicken caesar salad ($148) was too light on flavour for my taste with the dressing, chicken, and croutons all a bit bland. There are six salads on the menu though so if a mild caesar salad doesn’t strike your fancy, perhaps another will.

Where Cafe Boheme really shines though is the pizzas and pastas. There’s a reason this restaurant is proving to be the most popular in the Alto Residences block lately!

I highly recommend the spicy prawns pizza ($168). Not only are the toppings fresh and generously portioned, the sauce and spices have real kick.

Our tagliatelle carbonara ($148) was also a winner. The tagliatelle itself was nice and eggy and the sauce was well balanced and flavourful. This may be a dish best shared but I didn’t find it so rich that I couldn’t eat a whole bowl myself. While we didn’t have room to try the seafood linguine ($148), many tables were ordering this and it looked delicious. Another one I’m keen to try during my next visit.

We ended our meal with tiramisu ($68) and dame blanche ice cream ($78). Both classic, creamy and kid-friendly.

Verdict

Whether you live in TKO or are visiting the area (lots of bike and running paths!), add Cafe Boheme to your list of places to eat. It’s great for families but also cute enough for dates. The pizzas and pastas are done very well. And it’s well-priced, too.
