New brunch review: Spanish food at La Rambla in IFC, Central, Hong Kong
Did someone say unlimited truffle bikinis, jamon croquetas, and broken eggs?
La Rambla’s my favourite Spanish spot in town. I love the decor, vibe, large patio and certainly the food. The one drawback is it’s on the pricier side. So I was glad to know their new ‘mercados gastronómicos’ market style brunch ($550, free for kids under 10) allows guests to try many of their best selling items… and some are unlimited!
Here is the menu. All items are served to your table.
La Barra and Tapas
Eat your fill of Spanish cheese, charcuterie, crystal bread with fresh tomatoes, marinated white anchovies, as well as their excellent takes on truffle ham and cheese bikinis, jamon croquetas, and broken eggs with chorizo. There’s salad, too.
Not on the menu but also offered during our visit was a fabulous salmon tartare on toast. It had the most addictive, buttery spread.
It’s so easy to overindulge on this section (like I did…) but you’ll want to leave room for your mains.
Butcher’s Corner
We chose the USDA Prime Tomahawk, Josper grilled and served with fried potatoes. Delicious.
Paella
Choose between four types of paellas: Classic with calamari and clams, Squid Ink with calamari and clams, Vegetarian with asparagus and seasonal vegetables, or Pork Belly with Iberico pork belly. My friend and I had both tried (and loved) the Squid Ink one before, so opted for the recommended Pork Belly option. While my friend thought it was absolutely delicious and nearly ate whole pan herself, I thought the flavour and fattiness was a bit overwhelming. That said, I did have seconds of the various tapas whereas she didn’t so it might just be a case of leaving enough room.
Algo Dulce
We were stuffed to the brim but managed to take a little bite of everything on this dessert platter in the name of research. I’m still thinking about the peach muffins.
Verdict
La Rambla is an easy restaurant to recommend. Chef Ferran Tadeo, who has quite the resume including time at El Bulli, and his team cook up seriously delicious food and the vibe is equal parts comfortable and sophisticated. If you’re looking for an indulgent brunch, definitely consider this one. And grab a glass of their Sangria Cava ($128) with rose, cava and strawberry while you’re at it.
